╗╗╗╗ Updates for !BackGrd ⌐ A.J. Cawte 1991/92
<1.02 : pre-release versions
1.02 : First release version (Shareware).
1.12 : Supports saving to another application via the file '<Wimp$Scrap>'.
Keyboard short-cuts added.
1.13 : 'Set Mode' option added - allows automatic selection of Desktop
screen mode depending on mode used for backdrop sprite.
Checks performed to ensure enough memory is available to load a new
sprite as a backdrop - error reported otherwise.
1.14 : Check added to make sure that the picture file really does exist
when loading a new state file - error reported if the sprite file
cannot be found.
!Run file updated so that the !Sprites file is loaded whether or not
the !Boot file has been run (makes Backdrop file icon appear
correctly if !BackGrd was loaded with '*DESKTOP !BackGrd' or
similar).
Templates altered slightly to prevent 'save' and 'info' windows from
shrinking slightly whenever certain screen modes are selected!
1.15 : Check added to ensure that the default backdrop file exists -
error reported and default '<BackGrd$Dir>.Blank' loaded if not.
1.16 : While loading a new program/application/picture/state file, the icon
on the icon bar (if enabled) changes to an hourglass.
Sprites '!backgrd' and 'file_455' altered slightly.
1.17 : 'Run Boot' option added - runs !Boot file whenever an application is
run from !BackGrd.
1.18 : 'Load Sprites' option added - loads !Sprites file into Wimp sprite
area (using *IconSprites) whenever an application is run from
!BackGrd.
1.19 : 'Open Parent' option added - opens the directory viewer containing
the program.
1.19b: No longer needs !Boot file run in order for double-clicking on a
backdrop file to load !BackGrd.
Backdrop window cannot be affected (eg. closed, brought to front etc)
by other applications.
1.20 : Up to 40 apps can be dragged to the backdrop, compared to 35
previously.
2.00 : Completely re-written from scratch. Only a couple of small routines
persist from release I versions.
Status bar added - displays various useful bits of info in a bar just
above the icon bar.
Backdrop files in new format, which is more compact than earlier
format.
Menus and save box altered to make them look nicer.
No longer copies all sprites into Wimp sprite area as well as program's
own - saves memory.
Multiple selection allowed for dragging items round the backdrop and
removing them.
Better handling of larger-than-usual sprites.
Faster changing of colours and 'application names' flag.
Hotkeys can be disabled if required.
Sprites re-designed to make Release II look better and be easy to spot.
Various other minor improvements.
2.01 : Bug fixed - clicking <MENU> over a sprite occasionally didn't work if
the status bar was disabled - OK now.
Doesn't change mode unnecessarily if the new backdrop sprite is in the
same mode as the screen.
Backdrop window cannot be affected by other applications (as v1.19b).
(nb. later Release I versions had all these anyway - only version 2.00
didn't!)
Sprites tweaked slightly.
2.02 : Bug fixed - removing an icon didn't remove its entry from the table of
hot keys, if it had one.
2.03 : Icons can be placed on the backdrop which execute '*' commands when
double-clicked, rather then running a file or application.
2.04 : 'Convert' utility upgraded so that converted files are identical in
format to those created by !BackGrdII itself. Previous version
created slightly different, longer files (that worked anyway).
Loading a state file containing a reference to a sprite file located
on a non-existent filing system now reports an error and loads the
file minus the sprite (as opposed to crashing and leaving !BackGrdII
totally confused).
Loading a state file when the current mode isn't big enough to show
all the icons no longer moves all the icons to fit the screen.
Similarly, icons are no longer moved when changing colours, flags etc.
2.05 : Multiple selection by dragging a box added.
'Select all' and 'Clear selection' options added.
Bug fixed - clicking lots of times with <ADJUST> over a 'Run boot'
or 'Load sprites' option no longer causes a fatal crash (obscure, eh?)
Bug fixed - menus now updated correctly if selection is made using
<ADJUST>.
2.06 : Double-click handling improved so that double-clicking on a file
no longer loads the editor for that file, if it is already installed.
(eg. double-clicking a text file on the backdrop will not re-load
!Edit if it is already loaded).
2.07 : Bug fixed - loading a new state file didn't update the displayed
table of hot keys properly. Now OK.
Status bar moved 2 OS units to the right, to centre it correctly.
2.08 : Double pointer used when dragging, α la RISC OS 3.
Handling of errors during loading a sprite or state file improved.
Bug fixed - !BackGrdII will now load correctly after a reset. One or
two previous versions were rendered un-loadable by running 'Reset'
program!
Sprite moved 2 OS units to the right, to centre it correctly. (Only
really noticeable if the sprite is exactly the same width as the
screen). Redraw of screen updated to include this 'missing' column
as well.
2.09 : Text background is now always the same width as the text itself and
not the full 10 columns. Text plus sprite icons resized according to
text length rather than always being 10 columns wide.
'Load sprites' and 'Run boot' are always set to 'off' for a new
object dragged to the backdrop.
2.10 : Only one copy of !BackGrdII can be resident at once. An attempt to
load a complete second copy of !BackGrdII instead loads that copy's
default state file.
2.20 : Grid lock added - holding down CTRL while dragging icons around the
backdrop locks them to an invisible grid 192 OS units by 120.
Supports saving of the desktop state under RISC OS 3.
Applications from ROM under RISC OS 3 now get their correct icons
when dragged to the backdrop.
Handling of multiple drags to the backdrop improved so that they
no longer pile up on top of each other.
Supports dragging of a solid icon to save (as opposed to an outline)
under RISC OS 3 if enabled by *FX162 28 3.
